In the Northern Region of Uganda, many families living with disabilities face more than just physical barriers—they face the weight of being forgotten. For the poorest and most vulnerable, basic needs like a safe home or a bar of soap can feel like distant dreams.
Today, we are proud to share the progress of our latest initiative: The Major Construction, Renovation, and Psychosocial Support Project. Implemented by the Freidis Rehabilitation and Disable Centre (FRDC) and generously funded by the Dennis Wilford Foundation, this project is more than just a construction effort; it is a lifeline.
1. A Mission of Relevance
We chose to work in the districts of Lira, Alebtong, Oyam, Kole, and others across the region because these areas house families who have often lost hope. By targeting the most neglected—specifically children, women, and the elderly living with disabilities—we are addressing a high demand for basic human rights: shelter, health, and dignity.
2. Real Impact, Real Stories
The true measure of our success isn't found in reports, but in the lives of people like Pamela Akuny and Abeja Victoria.
Pamela's Newfound Independence
In Ireda Agali village, 34-year-old Pamela Akuny has spent her life navigating the world on her buttocks due to paralysis in her limbs. Simple tasks like going to the latrine were monumental challenges.
Our Intervention: We plastered her kitchen and toilet, constructed a dedicated walkway, and leveled/cemented her surrounding area.
The Result: Pamela can now move safely and easily around her home, reclaiming a sense of independence.
A Home for Victoria
In Alebtong District, 19-year-old Abeja Victoria — paralysed in all four limbs and wholly dependent on her mother Akite Harriet — had been sleeping on flooded floors under a collapsed grass-thatched roof. Her request to FRDC was simple: *'I need a house, because if we have a house, we have everything.'*
Our Intervention: In just one week, we constructed a brand-new, two-bedroom house for Victoria from the foundation to the roof, totalling an investment of UGX 7,160,000 (~USD 2,125).
The Result: Smooth cemented floors Victoria can roll on, a dry weatherproof structure, and the dignity she and her mother deserve. Read her full story on our Impact Stories page.
3. Beyond Bricks and Mortar: Holistic Support
We believe that a house is only the beginning. To ensure these families thrive, the Dennis Wilford Foundation's sustainable strategy includes a "Basic Support" package. To date, we have distributed:
Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs and arm structures to get people moving.
Daily Essentials: Clothes, soap, mattresses, and bedsheets.
Nutrition: Food supplies and essential cooking ingredients.
Education & Security: Funds for rent, school fees, and scholastic materials for children.
4. Effectiveness & Gender Equality
We are committed to reaching everyone. Our current beneficiary reach is balanced to ensure those most at risk are prioritized:
Female Beneficiaries: 59%
Male Beneficiaries: 41%
While the need is vast and our resources are constantly stretched across ten districts, our staff and managers are working tirelessly on the ground to ensure every shilling is used to its maximum potential.
Looking Forward
The testimonies we receive daily confirm that this project is working. We aren't just building walls; we are rebuilding hope for the vulnerable communities of Northern Uganda.
