On February 24, 2025, a rehabilitation specialists team from FRDC visited Ocero Walter, a person with a disability at the age of 30 years whose muscles are too weak to support his body. He is fully reliant on a wheelchair provided by FRDC and full-time caregivers for most routine tasks.
A Warm Community Welcome
The rehabilitation team was welcomed by the host community of Ajobi Village, Ocokober Parish, Adwir Sub County, Ajuri County, and Alebtong District. The community duty bearers and stakeholders expressed their recognition of everything FRDC had done to help Walter reach his full potential.
Community Testimony
Mr. Awany Charles, Walter's father, and Mr. Bua Patrick Leo, the Local Council One Chairperson, testified that Walter is now participating in community activities and government programs. He runs his own income-generating secretariat and photocopying centre.
Continuing Challenges
Walter shared his experiences and concerns about remaining barriers, especially access to limited clean water and food security. His condition prevents him from moving far or doing physical activities like digging and agricultural work.
A Promise of Continued Support
The rehabilitation specialists counseled Walter and promised that water would be drilled in his own compound to serve three villages. When Walter and the community heard about this promise, he committed to introducing various economic reforms within the sub county so that the world should know that disability is not inability.
Walter's story demonstrates the lasting impact of FRDC's holistic approach — combining medical rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and community empowerment to create sustainable change.
